PINTXOS IN SANTURTZI

There’s no need to sit at a table to eat well in the Basque Country.

One of the best ways to get to know the local culture and people is to join in the custom locally known as Potes or Txikiteo, which entails going from bar to bar and having a txikito (small wine) or zurito (small beer) at each one, usually accompanied by local bar snacks known as pintxos.

Why are they called pintxos?

The name comes from the word pincho, which is Spanish for “skewer”, and originally referred to small portions of food served skewered to a piece of bread.

Santurtzi has several different areas where groups of friends gather to chat and enjoy pintxos.

They range from simple, traditional snacks to more original creations.

Every year the bars in Santurtzi hold a CONTEST TO PICK THE BEST PINTXO. Contestants must create a new snack, and the general public and a specialist jury rate them and pick the top three.

From bar to bar

"Pintxo-pote"

Pintxo-pote is a scheme in which bars offer special set prices for a drink accompanied by a pintxo on one day a week.

In Santurtzi it takes place on Thursday evenings in some neighbourhoods.

The taste of the sea
